Two weeks to go, submit early!

There are two weeks left in the Context.IO App Challenge! Submissions are due September 1 before 5pm EDT. Find out what time that is in your city.

If you’re just joining us, please read the Quick-Start guide and take a look at the Resources page.

Submission checklist

Before you say “Ship it!”, make sure you run through this list:

  • Have you explained how your submission integrates the Context.IO API?
  • Have you created a submission video? Does your video clearly demonstrate what your app does? Is it less than five minutes long?
  • Have you included at least one or more…

Virtual office hours reminder: Pick Tony's brain on 8/18

The third episode of virtual office hours w/ Context.IO's senior developer evangelist, Tony Blank, happens tomorrow at 12pm ET. Last week’s Q&A featured a surprise virtual tour of Tony’s swag hotel room, replete w/ Jacuzzi; he was in Wisconsin to speak at That Conference.

"Hot tubs for geeks" aside, we got some great questions last week — here are a few of the things Tony talked about:

  • What hoops must I jump through to get emails sent from my app to be accepted on the whitelist of acceptable receipts?
  • On the topic of privacy, what's the best way for…

Reminder: Virtual office hours Tues 8/11

Just a quick reminder that Context.IO's senior developer evangelist, Tony Blank, will be hanging out online tomorrow to answer your questions, give feedback on your app ideas, and generally shoot the breeze and talk shop. You can find him in this Google Hangout starting at 5pm ET

We got some awesome questions last week--here are a few of the things Tony talked about:

  • Our users will sign up using Office365/Outlook accounts. Some will have forwarding set on that account to pass it off to Gmail or other providers. Will Context.IO still intercept those 365 messages? Or will the forwarding interrupt…

One month left, start your draft now

There’s one month left in the Context.IO App Challenge. Submissions are due September 1 before 5pm EDT.

Start your draft now

Take a look at the submission form and make sure that your app meets the requirements. There’s nothing worse than getting to the deadline, only to realize that you’re missing a key component! And remember: once you begin a draft, you can save and edit it at any time prior to the deadline.

Prepare your video

Your submission must include a video illustrating your app and explaining how your submission integrates Context.IO’s APIs.

Too often, participants leave this video…

Virtual office hours: Online Q&As with Tony Blank every week in August!

Hey there! With a little over a month remaining in the hackathon, we thought you might want to check in on your app ideas, projects-in-progress, or technical questions about the Context.IO API. So we’ve set up virtual office hours with Tony Blank, Context.IO’s senior developer evangelist. Tony will be hosting online Q&A sessions once a week throughout August, and he is super psyched to learn about what you’re working on. (Seriously, he is. We’ve met him, and he gets really excited talking about all the things email data can do.)

You can find Tony online during these four Google…

Making a great submission video

We know you’re heads down on your app right now, but don’t forget about your submission video. It’s the first thing that judges and voters will review. FYI, both your text description and video should explain how your submission integrates the Context.IO API.

A good video tells the story behind your submission, providing a clear and concise explanation of what your app is and does. Here are some tips and a list of screencasting tools:

  • Establish your elevator pitch. In the first few seconds of your video, explain why your app is awesome. You can get into the details…

YUL <3 the latest Roadshow stop at the Montreal Startup Festival!

Vive l'API!

We thought we’d give our Francophile neighbors to the north a Bastille Day present, so we’re rounding off the Context.IO Roadshow with a Montreal happy hour this Thursday, 7/16, at Brutopia. The event is part of the International Startup Festival, which you should definitely check out if you are a Québécois (or just visiting). Come raise a glass with Tony Blank, Context.IO's senior developer evangelist, and chat with him about your projects.

We know you’re chugging along with your email data apps, but we’re around if you’ve got questions or just want to float an idea. Drop us…

How to add users with Context.IO

One of the first steps you'll need to take to get started using Context.IO is to get permission to access your users' email accounts. There are two different methods for adding users. The easiest way is with connect tokens, where users are redirected to Context.IO, and Context.IO guides them through the authentication process. If you want to control each step of the user flow, you can add users via a series of API calls. For details and more information, check out this blog post from Graham, one of Context.IO's developer evangelists.

Using the Context.IO receipt parsing feature

Hi devs!

If you’re considering using receipt parsing for your app, here’s some additional information to help you get started.

NOTE: The receipt parsing feature is currently in private beta. We are giving advanced access to anyone participating in the Context.IO App Challenge. Please treat all results and findings in regard to receipt parsing as confidential and do not share it outside of your engineering team.

What does it do?

The beta receipt parsing feature will identify an online purchase receipt within an email body and return consistent structured data about the purchase. You have the ability to identify new…

$$$ + 1:1 Mentoring sesh = Better start hacking!

Hi everyone,

We wanted you to know that your email data apps aren’t just up for cash prizes anymore (although there’s nothing wrong with cash!). We figured that after killing yourselves, pulling all-nighters, poring over data, and coming up with the most beautiful consumer apps known to man, you might want a little something extra to walk away with (besides money and adulation, duh). Well, we’re giving it to you: The grand prize is now $50,000 plus a 30-minute mentoring session with one of our judges. Nifty, right?

Oh, and we just added one more city to the Roadshow--pony up…

On the road with Context.IO

Hey folks!

Guess what’s happening in the next couple weeks, besides the summer solstice? A traveling Context.IO happy hour and meetup!

Starting next Tuesday, Context.IO will be hitting the road to meet with local developer communities over free drinks and snacks. You’ll have the chance to schmooze, booze, and peruse the crowd (think potential teammates!). Our senior developer evangelist, Tony Blank, will be there to chat and answer any questions you have about the API or your projects.

We’re kicking off in San Francisco (6/16) and keep it moving in Atlanta (6/22), with more cities to be announced soon. RSVP…

Return Path CEO on how to break through the app noise

First off, thank you for participating in the Context.IO App Challenge. I hope you’re as excited as the other judges (Fred Wilson, Brad Feld, David Cohen) and I are.

If you have one takeaway from what this contest is all about, it should be: Innovation.

When Return Path acquired Context.IO back in 2012, it was a three-person operation solving a difficult problem for developers with a groundbreaking product. Since then, we have scaled the API business up to where we are today, with 14-15 million API calls per day. It has been an incredible experience seeing what such a talented…
